Review: EAS Advantedge Carb Control Peanut Butter Crisp Bar

Welcome to my first EAS review! If you read regularly, you know I’ve been trolling the nutrition bar aisle at Weis lately. But it turns out I totally missed the portion dedicated to EAS products and didn’t notice that they also offered single bars of several varieties. So I scooped up a bunch, and that’s how I ended up finally eating this Carb Control Advantedge Peanut Butter Crisp bar.

It has 17 grams of protein, 6 grams of fiber, and only 1 gram of sugar for 240 calories. It looks a bit like a Luna bar on steroids, with a crispy body and chocolate base coating and drizzle. It smells like peanut butter already, which is a good sign. It’s a bit darker than I would have expected, more orange than peanut butter-colored.

Biting into this bar is a bit of a surprise. You’re expecting something like a Rice Crispies Treat because of how it looks, but it’s more of a chewy deal than crispy. It’s whole lot more substantial than just your average granola bar, which means it’s much more satisfying. At the same time, it’s still easy to eat, and I had no trouble breaking pieces off with my hands or biting.

As for the taste, there’s definitely some peanut butter making itself known, but at the same time it’s a little fake and slightly sweet. Still, not bad for a protein bar. The chocolate isn’t overly prominent, which is fine because it complements the peanut butter and helps mitigate the funkiness without obliterating the other flavors. The coating has a silky texture, making this bar feel indulgent, and the base is a bit juicy, which enhances the peanut butter.

Maybe I’m getting desensitized with all the nutrition bars I’ve been eating lately, but this was overall a well-done peanut butter/chocolate job. It wasn’t overwhelmingly peanut buttery, but it wasn’t disappointing either. If you like Luna bars but want more, I’d recommend trying this one out.

Taste: 8--definitely peanut butter, but might be a little fake. The chocolate coating helps.
Texture: 9--a dense granola bar that’s easy and satisfying.
Health: 7--not a lot of sugar or active carbs, plus 17 grams of protein...BUT the first ingredient on the list is soy protein isolate, not whey.
Eat Again? Maybe.
