Review: iSatori Eat Smart Bar Chocolate Peanut Butter Caramel Crunch

I think we can all agree  that there’s nothing better than free stuff, whatever that free stuff might be. In my case, it’s usually food, although I have gotten several bumper stickers, magnets, and even a foam mattress sample (which sound silly, but is pretty darn comfortable to park my butt on). But as you can probably guess from the title, the free stuff I’m talking about this time came from iSatori. They were kind enough to ship me some samples and a shaker bottle after I reviewed their Eat Smart Cinnamon Caramel Crunch bar on, and about a month ago on this blog.

There’s some Amino Phase, a couple packets of RestorAID, a shaker bottle, and today’s focus: a Chocolate Peanut Butter Caramel Crunch Eat Smart Bar!

Since this came in the mail only a few days ago, it’s very smooth and fresh. It has not sat in the cold basement, although it was delivered in subzero temperatures, but that doesn’t seem to have affected it. It’s big--80 grams--which you know I love. It’s also unique in that it’s more of a square than a log, like most protein bars.

The good news is that it smells like chocolate with a hint of peanut butter. The inside looks a little dark for pure peanut butter taste, hinting at the caramel. Hmm, let’s see...

Well, it’s definitely peanut buttery! In fact, surprisingly so. That’s the dominant flavor, which means all is right with the world! :) That said, I did detect a little sour hint at the end as the flavor wore off, but that was quickly fixed by the next bite.

The chocolate coating is the perfect complement to the peanut butter, adding just enough flavor to remind me of a Reese’s cup...if Reese’s cups were crispy! Its smoothness contrasts nicely with the crispy inside, making this bar basically a chocolate-covered peanut butter Rice Krispies Treat, albeit with a denser crunch.

The caramel isn’t a big player, although this bar is sweeter than straight-up out-of-the-jar peanut butter, so maybe that’s its influence. In my opinion they could drop “Caramel” from the name and it wouldn’t make a difference. Still, for me as a peanut butter nut, this is a really well-put together bar with plenty of peanut butter flavor. It really did feel more like a snack/treat than a protein-delivery method. It’s definitely better than the cinnamon version, and something I’d eat again!

Taste: 9--lots of peanut butter, complemented with smooth chocolate; not sure about the caramel component, but the aftertaste is hardly noticeable.
Texture: 9--a slightly denser Rice Krispies Treat.
Health: 8--it does have a lot of sugar, but if you use it pre-/post-workout is might be just what you’re looking for. Plus 27 grams of protein might make it worthwhile.
Eat Again? Yes!
