Blue Bunny 24 Karat Gold Carrot Cake (An Ice Cream Review)

So far I have not had much success in buying pints of Blue Bunny’s Duff Goodman line of cake flavors. They’re icy and...just weird, although after a Ben & Jerry’s fiasco I’m starting to think it’s partly due to how the Weis I buy them at treats their ice cream. I did enjoy the Triple Chocolate Cake flavor much more in the bigger carton we bought at Wal-Mart months ago.

Still, when you don’t know if you’ll like a flavor, you don’t want a whole 12 servings (or however many they put in there these days). And I did want to try the 24 Karat Gold Carrot Cake ice cream, so I bought a pint of that.

Incidentally, it was the same day I bought my disastrous pint of Stephen Colbert’s Americone Dream.

The top shows a little ice, but hopefully we’ll get past that as we delve deeper. This is described as “Carrot cake flavored ice cream swirled with cream cheese frosting flavored ice cream and carrot cake pieces.

I’ve got to hand it to them, this tastes EXACTLY like carrot cake. On a side note, I’ve never  thought carrot cake tasted like carrots...more like cinnamon or oatmeal or maybe nutmeg? Anyway, if you like carrot cake you’ll like the carrot cake ice cream. The cream cheese ice cream was just kind of there. Then again, I don’t eat cream cheese much (at all, really), so I’m not the best person to tell you whether or not it tasted like cream cheese.

What I will say, though, is that the ice cream was a bit icy even after digging through the top layer. I didn’t really like the crunch factor--I mean, ice cream is supposed to be creamy! But as it melted, the carrot cake ice cream got a lot creamier. However, the cream cheese ice cream was gritty even when slightly melted. So the texture fiasco isn’t entirely due to ice. The ice cream is also very light and fluffy, not dense like other premium brands. Though at 130 calories per serving, that’s expected.

Then there are the carrot cake pieces...

Well, they’re carrot cake, anyway. Certainly nothing to write home about. They’re grainy, mushy, but not that moist like the pieces in Triple Chocolate Cake. Personally, I’d rather have moist and dense cake than airy, cakey cake...but I suppose carrot cake is usually grainy. The pieces just didn’t wow me, I guess.

The overall flavor of this ice cream was certainly well done, but it lacked anything special to put it over the edge for me. Still, it has an advantage in that I never have carrot cake readily available because no one else in the house will eat it. So if I’m in the mood for carrot cake, I’ll have to turn to Blue Bunny. Too bad I missed Ben & Jerry’s version when it was out.
